Contract

Need a contract for the work described in #1

  • Timeline - I propose maybe starting with a year, with possibility for extension?
  • Start Date - I'd like to start sometime in the first or second week of January, maybe whenever the term starts down there?
  • Salary - The NIH postdoc IRTA and NRSA ranges are obviously quite low compared to comparable software/hardware dev jobs. Given the push towards data infrastructure for the whole of the federal funding apparatus I will be applying for independent funding and working with you and the lab on grants related to it that will presumably have some degree of success. The work I intend to do will also be extremely inexpensive, mostly software work that requires a few test servers and some networking hardware, and I'll also be working to make the rest of the lab's work more cost- and labor-efficient as well. I'm not sure if there are formal restrictions on wages but how does $65,000 annually sound as an opening bid, with the expectation that I'll be working towards paying my own way in the next few grant cycles
  • Benefits - Need details on benefits/insurance, presumably set by some CBA with the postdoc union?

This is probably the last issue to be closed, since it's basically a formalization of the rest of them lol

The Neurology HR department will help generate a Postdoc contract with specific details in it but I can hit on the major topics here.

  • Timeline - Postdoc contracts are year-to-year with a total allowable length of 5 or 6 years before needing to switch into a Research Scientist position. I have no expectation for postdocs to stick around past whenever they feel they should leave. While contacts are year-to-year, unless substaintial unexpected issues come up you can expect an informal initial commitment from me of 2 to 3 years. That said, my lab has very solid funding for the next 4 years (and I am sure more funding will come in during that time) and I imagine I will be happy for you to stay in lab past 3 years if you want.
  • Start Date - Starting towards the first half of January would be great. If you don't need a Visa, which I think you don't, hiring should be very straightforward and not delay anything.
  • Salary - We can start with $70K annual salary. Salary can be negotiated each year before you renew your postdoc contract. I imagine we will be able to pretty easily get additional funds for the work you will be doing and I would be totally open to increasing your salary further down the road.
  • Benefits - I will send you the details of postdoc benefits tomorrow. From what I remember you get health, dental, and eye insurance covered with pretty resonable premiums and copays. You might get access to a retirement account but I don't think UCLA does any matching of funds for that.

I should be able to send you the cooky cutter layout part of Marcel's postdoc contract/offer tomorrow.
