Deleting a branch is permanent. Although the deleted branch may continue to exist for a short time before it actually gets removed, it CANNOT be undone in most cases. Continue?
It's important to me to be involved in my community and in the broader labor movement. Additionally coordinating with other projects is sort of intrinsic to the nature of the project at hand, and organization takes a substantial amount of work on its own.
I am curious about how this would work in the lab - for example, in the case of a local emergency that would need volunteers to distribute resources, or a picket line for a sister union, would I be able to take a (non-excessive) amount of time off work to do stricto sensu non-work related things?
I'm also curious about time spent organizing more work-related things like workshops and conferences: for example next year I would like to organize a conference with a few other large collaborative projects around techniques for meta-collaboration across disciplines, which would trade off with work done in the lab.

Sure. No issue at all here. I think you are a reasonable person, and community involvement is central to the work my group aims to do anyways, so I don't forsee any problems arrising from where you feel you should invest time concerning these topics.
